Mid week musings

I am still here. Just busy. We have our local elections tomorrow, and one of the classrooms at school is being used as a polling station, so Debs and I draped all the computer equipment very fetchingly in maroon fabric this afternoon. Not that there is a living soul who would not know what is under the fabric, of course. Still, that is not my problem. It is covered.

The weather has been great, and I have done all my work experience visits. Our Year 10s are out getting some working experience at the moment. They have 2 weeks off, and the ones I have visited are happy and enjoying it, but tell me some are not! That I can believe. Every child is visited and assessed by a member of staff in the second week, so it has been a case of revolving doors at school as we all fly off when we have a free lesson. (I teach age range 11-16 at the moment.)

This weekend is a long weekend for May Day, so I am really looking forward to more time to relax. Why is our life conducted at warp speed??? I have been reading one of John Ortberg's books, and he talks a great deal about hurry and busy-ness, and how detrimental they are. I understand completely. One of his suggestions is to (get this!) choose the LONGEST queue at the supermarket. And practice patience. Hmmmm. I get his point though! I need to find more time for solitude and peace. Alone-ness, as opposed to loneliness is something I really need.

  1. Just curious Linds: What type of work do the ten yr olds do??
I can understand the rationale behind choosing the longest line in the market and then practicing patience. Not sure my husband would go for that as he always tries to pick the shortest one and will even change if one is moving faster.

  2. It really doesn't sound as though your job gives you much room for all that reat and relaxation they are always telling us we need! What busy days you are having.
Well I do agree we need to learn to have patience, but I don't think I'm willing to do it that way. I must admit though, that whichever line (queue) I choose no matter what length it is - takes the longest :)
Glad you have a long weekend coming up. Rest and relax!!

  3. I took part in the work experience program when I was in High School...we would go to school in the mornings and work in the afternoons. It was all secreterial related and I got to work in 5 different offices, 2 months at each place. I loved it:-) You certainly have been very busy, hopefully you have some long vacation time coming up?? Makes sense what that author says about choosing the longest line up! xox

  4. I also am the one that you don't want to get behind, or you will take longer to get through. But - I usually have a book with me, in case I get in a long, slow line!

  5. Hi Susie... our Year 10s are 16, and they do any sort of work. My visits were to pre-schools. Some work in industry, some in offices, hotels, hairdressers etc. It is usually a great shock to have to be punctual, polite, follow instructions, and actually do some work! Hopefully, they will come back to school with a new realisation that they need to work, to get qualifications, to be able to make something of their lives. I hope.

  6. Around here the main thing I've noticed that is lacking in the young people I see working is people skills. So few seem to just know how to be polite, helpful and accommadating. Some don't even know how to smile or look pleasant. And forget the ability to count back change properly.....all they can do is read what the register says and slam the change and the receipt into your hand. It is such a treat to find the exception once in awhile. Hope you enjoy your day off. Do you get the summer off?

  7. Term ends on 20th July. And we go back at the start of September. Not as long as in the States. But... we are going to see my daughter in NZ (in mid winter there) and our summer will be rather short. So that is a definite carrot on a stick for me!

  8. Interesting idea about getting in a long line and practicing patience. I think I could do it, but I know for certain that my husband could NOT. He'd jump from one line to the next just to find one that is moving forward. Silly man.
